On Thursday, November 30, 2017, Dover, Delaware experienced a 4.1 magnitude earthquake according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Members of the Sustainable Materials Research Laboratory reported feeling the quake at the lab's location in Mullica Hill, New Jersey, nearly 75 miles from the earthquake epicenter. In fact, the lab's Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA) picked up on the vibrations during the analysis of a polymer sample. As can be seen in the picture below, the highly sensitive TGA experienced unusual fluctuations in its weight measurements due to the propogating seismic waves. Cool!
